I've had this book sitting on my Kindle for a while now - the description always interested me, but I'd have library books to read before they needed to be returned. It was a really enjoyable read! Very engaging after the first chapter or so. It felt like the author really didn't have much interest in writing the story when magic was removed from the picture, with the sentences lacking flow. Once the character began interacting with the other major players in the story, the flow issue was fixed.Given the age of characters and being set as a college study abroad experience, it should resonate with people in the "new adult" category, but the behavior/vocab used fits right in with YA. I'm older than the target audience for each of those genres, but I really enjoyed it and would say any age that enjoys fantasy set in the real world would like it as well.I feel like more could've been done to take advantage of the "semester at sea" program the characters were involved in. There was a little bit of it with mention of different magical creatures at different places the program had trips to. It might have been interesting to see the main character, Jen, learning about magic with more detail at each site. There could've been multiple books doing that, with lots of variety since it'd be different countries and different magical beings in each one. I really enjoy Jen and every other magic she befriends, and I want more of her story and interactions with them. With reading part of book 2 so far, I miss the exotic locations. But, I'm someone who will always want more and more books when I get into a series.One last thing to note: There's some extra content once you finish the story. The book's beginning is retold by one of the magical passengers, so you get to peek into another's brain. And there's a glossary/wiki type thing about magic that gets into types, familiars, etc. It was interesting to read that talking about attributes book 1 doesn't hit, only to see them brought up in book 2. The content was really enjoyable - I typically ignore that kind of bonus feature, but it felt like something you'd see in Harry Potter with a book introducing magic to newbies. It just helped to further define the rules of this world Jen finds herself in :)Overall, highly recommend. I almost put it aside when reading the first few pages because they weren't engaging me. Push through that tiny bit, and you'll get to a story that will hook you on the series. I have always wanted to experience a semester of schooling aboard a ship. But, because I have a fear of the ship sinking, I’ve never followed through—I’ve never even been on a cruise, to be honest. Instead, I opted for educational semesters in Europe, Asia, and South America, so I can’t complain in the least, but… the semester aboard a ship—that’s the one that got away.Kirke presents a magical world aboard this ship, one of vampires, merfolk, water and fire elementals, witches, and werewolves… and I can only imagine how much fun it would be to be on a ship with all these colorful characters. However, Jen herself put a damper on my mood when it came to all the festivities and issues: Jen always seemed to need saving. She didn’t listen to others and, on many an occasion, got others hurt because she wouldn’t listen and then wouldn’t be able to take care of herself. I’m more of a strong female lead enthusiast than a damsel in distress one, and so I held some animosity towards Jen and her inability to do anything throughout much of the text. The other characters were great, and I enjoyed them very much, but Jen just wasn’t my favorite, which is a shame as she was the main character. However, by the end she does learn to take care of herself a little bit—she’s growing, as it were—and I think she’ll be a much stronger character in the next installment.(Please note: I use the rating system of Goodreads, which is different from Amazon.
