I'd consider this as a novella rather than a fully-realized book. Apparently, Haley said something in class that led her to bring herself out of the closet. Now she's learning to live with that. The girl she's liked forever, Kate, wants to get to know Haley better, as in dating. They ake a cute pair and their families are very supportive. (The early dates are not part of this book, but offered as separately as a collection of 4 stories.)The conflict comes when Kate wants to go to the prom with Haley, and Haley's scared to be out so publicly. The story ends when Haley resolves their argument by saying she will go as Kate's date to the prom.Where the author short-changed her readers is that there is real value in showing that coming out is a series of small, sometimes scary steps. If the book ended at a logical place, with Haley becoming more comfortable with being out, the readers would be absorbing that feeling for themselves, I think. I would also like to see Haley stand up to her little sister. I also thought that with a longer book, something interesting might happen between the 2 best friends. This is a cute, sweet story about a high school girl having her first lesbian fling. Not deep, not complicated. Bringing to mind the good old days of teenager-dom. Haley has a crush on Kate the cheerleader, whom she thinks is heterosexual. So she's scared to even speak to her, thinking she'll be totally rejected as a recently out-of-the-closet high school senior getting ready to begin LIFE. Imagine her surprise when Kate approaches her for help with a class and then a study session and then a movie date, and on and on. Haley is so overwhelmed by her good fortune that she expects every minute to do something stupid and blow it--and of course eventually she does. But, thankfully, that's not the end of the story.
