A sweet book that actually had grit. This was the perfect sweet book. It wasn’t sweet enough to give a tooth ache, but I didn’t worry about these characters. Two men helping each other while they found love. The writing was great, the smexy was good, and the side characters... I probably should read previous books to know about them. Just think. Riley and Brendan can say they met over the parking lot garbage cans!Brendan thought Riley was being abused, and Riley was, well, Riley. From there it's a low angst work relationship between boss and intern. There's not much attraction between the two. Brendan admires Riley's gumption, but respect and admiration aren't attraction. He comes across as very self contained, able to focus on work, and doesn't want to cross lines with a new hire.Riley needs time to change gears and go from his shelter, food, surviving mindset to feeling cared for and safe. He never gives away any of his feelings until he breaks out in this mad want. My thought is Riley is so conditioned to please, to get along in a group setting, that expressing his feelings is difficult. But no, I didn't feel a connection between Riley and Brendan, that this is their someone special, someone to love. They act like friends with benefits because that's the way their relationship's written.Shifting for the first time was wonderful and the family acceptance. The modern world technology was a bit odd, like this world parallels ours, and shares the same medical procedures. Not enough to kick me out of the story, but it ended up feeling like a lot of other shifter mates mpreg stories.
