I truly enjoyed this story about a rejected diamond in the rough (yep, I've been watching Aladdin) who finds love and acceptance.This book won't change your life, eventhough the author either tried to, or he/she just wanted to show how woke they are.Firstly we are told (reminded) that not all aliens identify as a certain gender.I have read, and thoroughly enjoyed, a book about an alien who chose his gender, against his society's expectations, because of the person he fell in love with.In this book however, I felt that the author was trying to force a social commentary somewhere for the sole purpose of seeming woke. It has nothing to do with the story or plot and was so egregiously placed, that it felt like the author was standing on a soapbox.Then we are (literally) reminded that we are not to judge other cultures until we have spent time in those cultures. I agree with this to SOME degree, but it is said in a way that felt as if the soapbox was dusted off again.We aren't allowed to come to this conclusion ourselves, we are blatantly told not to do it. It would be so much better if this book made you think and possibly come to the realization on your own. The author however either doesn't trust the reader to put some thought into it, or doesn't believe the book is written well enough for it to happen organically.Lastly, the author comments on the problems with capitalism. He/she tells us about a planet were everybody's basic necessities are taken care of by the government and no one goes without. How does the government pay for all this? There are no taxes or inheritance, so once citizens die everything they owned goes to the government.Because of how that society is structured, this will especially not work in this book. (I'm not going into the whole thing, but for example, only 80% of the citizens will even consider working. So think about how governments struggle to pay for everything and then take away 20% of their money on top of that.)Yes, a planet with no homelessness or hunger is amazing and it would be very cool. The problem is the author takes a complex problem and addresses it half heartedly. Either don't say how it's done, or have a reasonably good way how this is achieved.Without the above I might have rated the book 3.5 stars, but I don't like being talked down too. Nor do I want an alien romance novel to assume it can or should school me of the latest social justice trends.If the social commentary doesn't get worse I will keep on reading this series. Its not great, but it is entertaining if you have nothing new to read by your favourite author. First time reading from this author. The plot is almost like all other sci-romance. An earth abduction from aliens, being abductee gets sold/rape...but lucky she just get sold here. Falls in love with an alien. The twist here is that all this is true but here because of shortage of female, she gets to choose whom she wants to stay with for a period if time. I love that this one has a very alien concept of husbandry. I definitely will like one of my own alien from this planet. A great start to a series. There’s so much potential here for more books, we met quite a few at the beginning and at the end. So many Calcanians male without mates, 😋. Definitely will be keeping an eye out for the next book.
