Ebook About Federal Agent Lucas Beaumont has an agenda — get himself assigned to the case of the apparent serial murders at Lancaster Falls, find out who the murderer is, and then lay the ghosts that haunt his grandfather to rest. In the midst of a horrific murder investigation, the only peace he gets is from simple moments in a warm kitchen, talking to hotel owner, Josh. Attraction to the easygoing man is something he didn’t expect; in doing so, he opens himself to hurt, but at the same time, he begins to fall in love.Josh is struggling to keep the Falls Hotel, even with every cent he has invested in its upkeep. The one thing keeping him above water is the not entirely legal work he does on the side—a steady income that not even his son knows about. When the FBI takes over his hotel for the duration of the Hell’s Gate serial killer case, Josh is faced with the real possibility that Lucas will not only discover his secret but also steal his heart. When tragedy hits Josh and his son, and when it seems all hope is lost, can Lucas rescue them both?Word Count: 80,000Book All That Remains (Lancaster Falls Book 3) Review :
The FBI has sent Agent Lucas Beaumont to get things started in Lancaster Falls. He's there to help solve the case of who killed and dumped the women who were identified in book 2. He also has a second reason for being there that no one but his grandfather knows.Josh Baker is the owner of the hotel in Lancaster Falls. He's having trouble keeping the hotel afloat since the recession and is doing a little side work for repair money. He's raising his son Harry by himself and doing a great job. What I liked:*The mystery continues and is actually heating up.*I didn't figure out who the killer was, so it kept me intrigued until the end.*I liked the chemistry between the characters, especially between Josh and Harry. Josh is a great dad and his love for Harry was shown and wholeheartedly felt.*I really liked that Harry was written as an average teenager but not a troubled teenager. What I didn't like:*This book continues the theme of poor punctuation with run-on sentences and overuse of commas. Example: "I knew all about Sawyer becoming captain after the former chief, Peter Sandoval, had retired, a cop who had been part of that group my grandpa called corrupt; Sandoval had been one of the newest of the team but had risen through the ranks quickly as people died or moved on."***This whole series needed a better editor.****In Chapter 3 Sandoval is pleading for his families safety with Lucas and Lucas just walks away. This isn't good behavior from a layperson, must less an FBI agent. I don't care if you think he's a bad guy and your POV is skewed because of someone else's past experience.*When the killer is revealed their reasoning is beyond bizarre. The reasoning didn't make a bit of sense.*Josh finds out some chilling information on one of the townspeople and goes to Sawyer. Sawyer takes it seriously but when he can't immediately find said person, he pretty much blows it off. When Josh doesn't allow this to be blown off and hunts down the person, he's treated as a criminal and Sawyer arrests him. Totally bogus! Sawyer knew he didn't have time to commit the crime and there was a witness anyway. This seems like just more drama that wasn't needed.*The romance was tepid in this book and needed more connection. I think if the series had been only a mystery and stayed focused on that it would have been better.*The whole story line of Josh's side job was blown out of proportion. In the end even the FBI says it's not illegal. So the blurb for the book stating "not entirely legal work" is just more drama.*All 3 books it's summer and in a heatwave. We get it, it's hot. I didn't need to read about it in every chapter, in every book. (This is only a very slight exaggeration!)*All 3 books are written with both MC's that are Bi but really prefer men. It was a little unrealistic IMO.*All 3 books have the MC's have parent traumas. Just seemed like it was written for the drama factor.I liked the mystery but I didn't love this series. It's a meh from me. Not sure I can recommend it but can't say stay away either, as others liked it. This is an exceptionally intense mystery wrapped in a beautifully developed love story that brings a brilliant series to a wonderful ending.Read the blurb carefully, and then if you haven't read either of the first two in the series, you'd better go back and start from the beginning because the mystery of the bodies in the lake begins there and proceeds grimly, and grisly at times, to the warped denouement in this edition. You can get a hint of who's the culprit here late in this book, but the way R.J. Scott leads up to the revelation does not prepare you for how the culprit is so viciously depraved. But getting there is so much fun when it involves cover-man FBI Agent Lucas and long-time series character hotel owner Josh, as well as Josh's feisty and brave 13-year-old son Harry. This romance is filled with longings, doubts, anxiety, hope and eventually deep love. This is a super series with a great cast of characters topped by a brilliant finish. Get it.
